Hi guys, I have to choose a book for my English 11 Honors class. It has to be by an American writer and a rather popular and social critical one. We have gotten a few examples, but I thought that you might have some books that you could recommend me.
There have to be many critical responses out in the world about this book, because we have to include those into our paper.
What book should I choose for my research paper?
tuesdays with morrie.. eleven minutes, the devil and miss prym.. those kinds..
Reply:Catcher in the Rye - JD Salinger? The ultimate 'social critical' novel. It's a bit like Marmite though - I hated it ;) but you know, I'm kind of in the minority there, haha...
Or what about On the Road by Jack Kerouac? I genuinely enjoyed that one, and it's another socially critical writer, I suppose. A google search revealed plenty of critics on the first page, so I don't think there'll be a shortage.

Reply:Ray Bradbury- Fahrenheit 451
Great book as well as thought provoking.
Reply:....Ooh, good question.
Two come to mind -- the first is PRIMARY COLORS, and I don't know if you need the author's name because -- that's part of the point. PRIMARY COLORS was by "anonymous," because it was a very thinly-disguised look at Bill Clinton's presidential campaign. Everyone went nuts trying to figure out who wrote it; the truth finally came out, but that did attract a lot of attention for a while, both because of what they were saying about the Clintons (it was gossipy, rather than outright saying the Clintons ate babies or anything), and about "who is the person who wrote this?"
It also got made into a movie with John Travolta and Emma Thompson.
The other option is THE CORRECTIONS by Jonathen Franzen -- I don't know too much about the book itself, but I do know that the critics were talking about it in some interesting ways because of the author's reaction to being picked for Oprah's book club (he said he wasn't too thrilled with the idea, actually, and Oprah got a little miffed and UN-invited him to the show where they'd be talking about his book).
Or there's A MILLION LITTLE PIECES, the book that was supposedly about a guy talking about his history of drug abuse, but only after it had made the best-selling list did people come forward and reveal that he'd made up the whole story.
Reply:The Invisible Man.
