this is my first research paper of 8 pages at my university class. The professor didn't say anything about biblio., but what do you think? should i?

Reply:Yes. Not only do you need to have a bibliography, but you also need to cite your sources where you use them. That applies for direct quotes as well as summarized or paraphrased facts, ideas and opinions.





For any quote, fact, or idea/opinion that you didn't come up with, you need to be clear about where you got it either:





1. in the text:


According to the Omaha Police Department's website, crime is up 5% since last year.


(you'd have the website in your bibliography),





Margaret Smith argues that the good old days were not as good as people like to say they were.


(again, Margaret Smith's book would be in your bibliography)





or:


2. by parenthetical citation


There are about four hundred known species of beans (Jones 159).

On the other hand, it's not necessary to cite very well-known facts, even if you did have to look them up, as long as you're not quoting your reference.





Your professor probably assumes everyone knows how and when to cite sources for a research paper and make a bibliography. If you do not, try to finish your paper early and take it to your university's writing center to have them check it and go over any problems with it.
