20th century american literature--i need to pick a book to write a big research paper on, any suggestions?

the book needs to be written by an american born author and written in the 20th century. i'll write a big research paper on it, so i kinda need to really like the book, and it needs to have a lot of criticism (so probably the book needs to have been around for a while and should be well known), to incorporate in my paper.

any suggestions of good books w/ plenty of criticism?

thank you!!

Fahrenheit 451 Ray Bradbury
Reply:take a look at the work of Orson Scott Card. His is the only body of work I've ever seen ANNOTATED! His genre is ostensibly science fiction but in fact the real theme is different than what you'd expect. There's a christian mysticism element in his books but he is NEVER, EVER PREACHY! The stories draw you along at their own pace. They are compelling, exciting, thought provoking, long remembered WONDERFUL stories.
Reply:To Kill a Mockingbird, Of Mice and Men, The Color Purple, The Great Gatsby... Funny, you can put together a good list of possibilities by reading the Books %26amp; Authors questions of the people who obviously didn't do the assigned reading.

If I had to do one, I might pick The Color Purple.
Reply:one i like is "to kill a mockingbird" i thought it was a good story but its not very long.

i wrote an essay on it %26amp; it wasnt 2 extremely hard.

hope it helps
Reply:read vonnegut. kurt vonnegut is a fantastic author. my all time favorite. i mean, i suppose vonnegut novels wouldn't appeal to everyone, but if it seems like your kind of thing, then go for it because there is so so so much in it to talk about.

slaughter house five is my all time favorite book. i think you could write a book on that book. plenty of stuff to talk about. check it out. its one of the best anti-war books ever written. so sad that vonnegut died. he died the same day the pub in my town burned down so i was left without a place to go and drink a beer in his memory. what a lousy day that was.
